Childhood is something to be enjoyed and cherished. Unfortunately, a large percentage of children in China cannot experience the joys of youth. Despite a remarkable history of dynasties and culture, a booming population stresses China's economy. An astonishing number of children, especially those who are disabled, are left orphaned because their parents simply cannot afford to raise them.

These children depend on orphanages for their primary needs. Yet, many orphanages are so strained from providing food and shelter that they are forced to overlook other fundamental needs such as emotional and social support. Lifeworks-China assists these orphanages in providing a loving and playful environment for the children.

Our program is organized and run by Brent Johnson, a longtime ActionQuest staff member. Since 1995, Brent and his wife Serena have been working with orphans throughout China. Brent is the Executive Director of China Care Foundation and is responsible for running all of the foundation's programs in China.

Our mission is to offer nurturing care to the infants, as well as provide essential childhood experiences through playing, creating art, and having fun.
In past programs, we assisted at the orphanage of Mountain Caves Village. Here, our role was to organize sports, arts and crafts, help build a playground, and assist in providing direct care for the children.

With a focus on laughter, we always play games and learn from each other through stories and pictures.

This Lifeworks program offers an opportunity to test your compassion and strength. We will be working under difficult circumstances, specifically in poor and underprivileged areas. Even so, there will be plenty of opportunities for exciting and rewarding experiences with the children.

A visit to China would not be complete without seeing the Great Wall and the famed Terra Cotta Warriors. So, between projects, we will tour these and many other sites. In Beijing, we will walk through Tiananmen Square and see the Imperial Palace and Forbidden City. You will even learn a bit of Chinese on your travels in this historically-rich nation.
